Practical Information

 Conditions of entry
 

Passport and visas are not required for travels from another town in Greenland, to Nuuk. However, to get to Nuuk from abroad, Passport and visa regulations to Nuuk, Greenland, are similar to the current rules applicable to Denmark.
 

Foreign currency
 

Danish coins and notes is valid currency in Nuuk, just as in the whole of Greenland, and there are no restrictions with regard to importing and exporting cash. Cheques drawn on Danish banks or savings banks as well as Euro-cheques can be cashed at the bank of Greenland in Nuuk, which will also exchange common currencies, traveler's cheques and so on. Postal cheques can be cashed at Nuuk post office. Credit cards can be used almost in all shops as well hotels.

 

Post and telephones...
 

Nuuk is amazingly advanced when it comes to communication. You can phone, send; faxes, e-mail, telegrams, faxes, letters, and postcards, among others through the post office, your hotels, Nuuk tourism as well as the Internet cafes.

Shopping

 

Generally speaking, though prices do vary, when it comes to items in the shops as well as quality, Nuuk can be regarded as a smaller town of Scandinavia. For example, fruit and vegetables are expensive while dairy products are cheap.

 

Souvenirs can generally be bought almost everywhere in Nuuk including the local shops, at Nuuk tourist office, the post office, just to mention a few. Please note that Nuuk is not accustomed to bargaining over prices.

 

Opening hours
 

Most shops are open from 10 a.m. to 5.00 p.m., Monday to Friday and 10 am to 13.00 p.m. on Saturdays. Smaller grocery shops and the fresh food shops are open longer on weekdays as well as all weekend.
 

"The Board"
 

"The Board" whose Greenlandic name is Kalaaliaraq ("The Little Greenlander is the local expression for the open meat and fish market to be found in Nuuk, just as in all towns of Greenland. Here, you can buy the day's harvest: seal, whale, musk, reindeer, fish and berries - straight from the fishers, hunters and pickers!

Electricity
 

Nuuk has a 220-volt power supply.

 

Import restrictions
 

Nuuk lies outside the EU, so import restrictions from EU to non-EU country apply. Moreover, please note that though Nuuk is part of the Danish kingdom, import to Nuuk is regarded as being overseas for Danish customs purposes.

 

There are also different restrictions regarding what can be brought to Nuuk, as well as quantities of different items. Such information is available at the airports. Please note that import of guns, pistols, fully and semi-automatic weapons, narcotics and most live animals, including domestic pets and birds of any kind are not permitted. However, guide dogs for the blind are an exception. 
 

Export restrictions
 

For the sake of the customs authorities in your home country, you will need in certain cases to bring along a certificate confirming that the relevant products are not made of material from an endangered species. Such certificates are obtainable from shops and Nuuk tourist office. This owes to the fact that certain countries have introduced a ban on products originating from Greenland: for instance, sealskin products, objects made of whale tooth/tusk and so on.

 

Entertainment

The price level of an average 2 to 3-course menu at a restaurant starts from approx. US $20.
 
The cost of alcoholic beverages in restaurants and pubs is high. E.g., a beer costs approx. US $5 and a bottle of wine upwards of about US $30. Prices include tips.
 
The pubs are open to people over 18 years of age only. You have an excellent opportunity of enjoying discotheques in Nuuk, with live bands.

Vaccinations
 

No vaccinations are required for traveling to Nuuk.
